Caroline Starr Rose to read from new book at Bookworks

Caroline Starr Rose of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 will read from and chat about 鈥淭he Burning Season,鈥� the title of her new novel for middle graders, at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at Bookworks. The novel, written in contemporary verse, is set in southwest New Mexico鈥檚 Gila Wilderness during fire season. The protagonist is 12-year-old Opal, who keeps a secret 鈥� she鈥檚 deathly afraid of fire. Opal is preparing to become a fourth generation lookout on Wolf Mountain. Opal, her mom and Gran live at 10,000 feet in a single room at the top of a fire tower. They鈥檙e responsible for spotting any hint of smoke before it turns in to an uncontrollable blaze.
In a starred review, BookPage called the novel 鈥渁 masterful, memorable coming-of-age tale that sensitively explores the power and pressures of family legacy.鈥�
Rose is also the author of children鈥檚 picture books and other books for middle schoolers.

AT BOOKS ON THE BOSQUE
Books on the Bosque is hosting two events this week.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, two Santa Fe poets 鈥� John Macker and Wayne Lee 鈥� will each read from their work. Lee鈥檚 recent book is 鈥淒ining on Salt: Four Seasons of Septets,鈥� which is described as a memoir in verse. In his blurb for Lee鈥檚 book, Macker called it 鈥渁n exploration of loss, using the septet poem as a channel to his inspiration.鈥�
At 3 p.m. Saturday, May 24, Santa Fe writers Vivian Shaw and Arkady Martine will read from and sign their work. Shaw is the author of the 鈥淒r. Greta Helsing鈥� contemporary fantasy series and the sci-fi/horror novela 鈥淭he Helios Syndrome.鈥�
Martine is the author of 鈥淎 Memory Called Empire鈥� and 鈥淎 Desolation Called Peace,鈥� which form the 鈥淭eixcalaan鈥� series. Each book won a Hugo Award for Best Novel. She鈥檚 also written many short stories.

IN PLACITAS
The Placitas Community Library will host a Summer Reading Party at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 18, that kicks off the library鈥檚 summer reading program. The program鈥檚 theme this year is 鈥淐olor Our World.鈥� At the party kids can learn about the program鈥檚 activities, register for the summer reading challenge and receive a new book of their choice. A special guest at the party will be Ziggy Prothro, from the New Mexico Office of Archaeological Studies, who will teach children a Native American game called 鈥淕inebig: The Snake Game.鈥�

AT COLLECTED WORKS
Hampton Sides of Santa Fe will sign copies of the paperback edition of his book 鈥淭he Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Capt. James Cook鈥� at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Collected Works, 202 Galisteo St., Santa Fe.
鈥淭he Wide Wide Sea鈥� was named one of the New York Times鈥� Best Books of 2024.
IN TAOS
At SOMOS Salon ecopoets Aspen Everett and Kathleen Willard will read from their work and converse at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24.
