From a Queer Prom to parades, New Mexico has a full lineup of Pride events
Pride in New Mexico is more than a celebration 鈥 it combines remembrance with history.
Events are being held across the state to honor the LGBTQ+ community, including parades, festivals and even a Queer Prom.
Meow Wolf鈥檚 鈥淗ouse of Eternal Return鈥 is hosting several events for Pride month, including its Queer Prom. Jessi Dooley, senior events manager, said the event aims to create a safe space for those in the queer community who might have missed out on prom.
The event began in 2023 in partnership with the Human Rights Alliance, which approached Meow Wolf as the venue and co-host.
鈥淲e had originally set it up, knowing that so many young people in school were queer, don鈥檛 have access to a prom,鈥 Kevin Bowen, HRA executive director, said.
鈥淲e also set up the first one as a remembrance and a little bit of a fundraiser for one of our deceased board members, her name was Shontez Denise Morris, and everyone used to call her Taz,鈥 Bowen said.
Morris was a security guard at Meow Wolf for many years, he said.
鈥淲e wanted to do something to always remember her energy,鈥 Bowen said. 鈥淪he loved young people, and she loved facilitating things happening that would make people happy.鈥
鈥淗ouse of Eternal Return鈥 will be hosting Pride (after Dark) on Saturday, June 27, an afterparty for the Santa Fe Pride festival and parade, Dooley said. There will also be an Adulti-Verse Pride Edition with drag bingo and more on Thursday, June 4.
The HRA is hosting several other Pride events across Santa Fe, including 鈥淚f These T-shirts Could Talk鈥 and 鈥淭he Epoch Eighties鈥 lectures at the New Mexico History Museum. Bowen said it is important to host these educational events because they produce intergenerational conversations.
鈥淚t is our responsibility to teach our history to the young people,鈥 Bowen said.
鈥淚f These T-shirts Could Talk鈥 will be led by PJ Sedillo, who served as president of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Pride for 21 years and now serves as the organization鈥檚 archivist and historian. The talk will be a 50-year retrospective of Pride in sa国际传媒官网网页入口.
Over the years, Sedillo has assembled panels that showcase the history of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Pride. He said there are currently 290 panels, and they will be on display at sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Pride Fest at Civic Plaza.
The history Sedillo has compiled showcases key events and leaders in the queer community.
Sedillo and his husband started Los Ranchos de sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Pride as a smaller, more family-friendly alternative to the larger sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Pride.
鈥淲e offer different opportunities for other people,鈥 Sedillo said. 鈥淪ome people don鈥檛 like large crowds.鈥
He said events like these are important because they help people feel comfortable becoming their true selves and finding a place in the community.
Sedillo said he wanted to provide a voice for people, 鈥渂ecause someone became that voice for me.鈥
