New Mexico is celebrating Free Fishing Weekend at public fishing waters across the state this weekend. Fishing license requirements are suspended on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, and anyone can fish for free.

New Mexico is celebrating Free Fishing Weekend at public fishing waters across the state this weekend. Fishing license requirements are suspended Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, and anyone can fish for free. Anglers must observe bag limits and all other rules and regulations.

鈥淭his is a wonderful opportunity for New Mexicans to learn how to fish and get outdoors,鈥 Mike Sloane, director at the New Mexico Department of Wildlife, said in a news release. 鈥淲e鈥檙e encouraging everyone to attend a nearby event or visit their local lake to enjoy the excitement of fishing in our state鈥檚 great outdoors.鈥

There will also be several events across the state in conjunction with Free Fishing Weekend.

  • Sixth annual Outdoor Adventure Day: 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at Liam Knight Pond, 500 Jones Road in Corrales. 

  • Route 66 Children鈥檚 Fishing Derby: 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 6, at Monastery Lake in Pecos.

  • Outdoor Adventure Day: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at Lake Maloya in Sugarite Canyon State Park near Raton.

  • Third annual New Mexico Desert Dogs Fishing with a Cop: 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 6, Young Park Pond, 850 S. Walnut St. in Las Cruces.
