New Mexico State Parks is offering free boating safety courses statewide in preparation for the recreation season at the state鈥檚 many lakes.

The Boat New Mexico Course, a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators-approved boating safety class, will be available in English and Spanish. The course covers navigation rules, safety equipment and boating practices.

鈥淣ew Mexico鈥檚 lakes offer incredible experiences for families and visitors, but boating safety must always come first,鈥 Scott Chalmers, New Mexico State Parks boating safety coordinator, said in a news release.

鈥淥ur courses help boaters understand the rules of the water, prepare for changing conditions and make responsible decisions that keep everyone safe.鈥
