City councilor blasts sa国际传媒官网网页入口 police conversation caught on lapel camera
At least one sa国际传媒官网网页入口 City Council member decried a recently publicized conversation between officers 鈥 where they refer to Native Americans as 鈥渟avages鈥 and espouse violence 鈥 during Monday night鈥檚 meeting.
Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn said the April 11 discussion, captured on a lapel camera and reported Sunday by the Journal, caught 鈥渟ome pretty horrific comments.鈥
She said sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Police Department Chief Harold Medina gave her 鈥渁 clear understanding鈥 that APD doesn鈥檛 support the comments and they would investigate which officers said what 鈥渁nd take appropriate action.鈥
Fiebelkorn then brought up 鈥渋nteresting comments鈥 given to the Journal by APD union President Shaun Willoughby.
鈥淥ne of the quotes was that 鈥榯hey were saying inappropriate stuff like a lot of us do with our friends and family when we鈥檙e not in public. ... They鈥檙e no different than anybody else,鈥欌 she said, parroting Willoughby. 鈥淚s that the position of APD?鈥
APD Deputy Chief Josh Brown, who was at the council meeting, responded, 鈥淚t鈥檚 not.鈥
Brown then issued an apology to the Native American community and sa国际传媒官网网页入口 residents in general.
鈥淪ome of those comments that you see, they鈥檙e not acceptable,鈥 he said.
Brown then referenced 鈥渄isparaging remarks鈥 from another part of the conversation, during which the officers appeared to criticize new APD recruits as being too soft and 鈥渟uper-sensitive.鈥
鈥淚f you look, those are the officers that are 鈥 that reflection in our culture change, the broader understanding and empathy that those officers see,鈥 Brown told Fiebelkorn, referring to the new cadets coming through APD鈥檚 academy.
Fiebelkorn said, of Willoughby鈥檚 comments about what people say behind closed doors, 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know if that鈥檚 what Mr. Willoughby does, but that is not what I do and that is not what the people of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 do.鈥
鈥淎nd it says a lot about how we, as a city, are going to treat folks when we鈥檙e in the field 鈥 being called out to help someone 鈥 if we think of them as lesser than or 鈥榮avages鈥 or any of the other horrible things that were said,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he idea that that鈥檚 just how people in sa国际传媒官网网页入口 behave is not true, and I think Mr. Willoughby should know that before saying something like that in public again.鈥
Willoughby, on Tuesday, told the Journal the councilor took his comments 鈥渙ut of context鈥 and pointed out that he also said the officers were embarrassed and their comments were made 鈥渋n jest.鈥
鈥淢y point was not that I close the door to my house and become a racist talker, but I think it is disingenuous and it is an unrealistic expectation to expect people to always behave as if they are in the public eye, all the time,鈥 he said.
Willoughby said the officers on the recording were 鈥渁bsolutely not鈥 bad apples within the department.
鈥淲hen people are around their family and friends, they probably say things that are less desirable and less politically correct, and I鈥檓 sure (Fiebelkorn) is guilty of it as well when she鈥檚 not on the dais and she鈥檚 around a group of trusted friends,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he point was that these are people, they are human beings, they made a mistake, they didn鈥檛 know they were being recorded. This stuff happens. They are people. They are not robots.鈥
