sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Public Schools tried out a weapons detection system this week at its most centrally located high school.

A metal detection device made by CEIA Weapons was tested at sa国际传媒官网网页入口 High School on Tuesday.

鈥淎PS is considering the purchase of a weapon detection system, and the district is exploring several options,鈥� APS spokesperson Martin Salazar said. 鈥淏ecause we鈥檙e a public entity, any such purchase would need to go through the procurement process.鈥�

The district said that it was committed to student safety and 鈥渟trengthening that commitment with updates that focus on technology.鈥�

The district said that, during testing, the device sounded an alarm as a metal water bottle with a knife passed through. When the water bottle was passed through the system without the knife, the alarm did not go off.

鈥淎 diverse group of stakeholders found the demonstration to be educational and helpful as we discern next steps and implementation,鈥� Salazar said of the device tested Tuesday.

The shopping around for security measures comes months after five firearms were seized at schools across the district in a single day.

On Aug. 20, two guns were located at sa国际传媒官网网页入口 High in August, two were recovered at West Mesa High School and another off campus near Del Norte.

In addition to guns found on or near campus, the district has seen two razor blades and two knives make their way onto campuses this school year, according to an itemized APS police list of evidence.

Salazar confirmed that the system tested can detect knives, and in a news release the district said it had tested the system鈥檚 ability to detect a knife.
