Fire erupts at South Valley recycling plant, second at the location in one month
Plume of black smoke is visible for miles; air quality alert issued
Bernalillo County firefighters are battling a blaze at the same South Valley recycling site that caught fire late last month.
Broadway Boulevard is closed in both directions at Prosperity SE, south of Rio Bravo, because of the fire, according to a social media post from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office. Drivers are asked to use an alternate route.
Forty personnel, including some from sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Fire Rescue and the Bernalillo County Sheriff鈥檚 Office, are assisting in fire suppression efforts, according to a news release from Bernalillo County Fire Rescue.
The blaze that sent up a plume of black smoke visible for miles is at the same location where a fire burned May 23, according to BCSO spokesperson Sgt. Connor Otero.
That fire was on about 2 acres, according to previous news reports. The cause remains under investigation.
Thick smoke from Tuesday's fire prompted the sa国际传媒官网网页入口-Bernalillo County Air Quality Program to issue a health alert that remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
"Those with respiratory conditions in the City of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 and Bernalillo County should limit outdoor activity," the advisory states.
Residents have been advised to turn off their swamp coolers to help prevent smoke from being drawn into their homes, according to the county fire department.
