OPINION: NMSU Foundation Reaches $500 Million in assets: What that means for New Mexico

Published

For a land-grant institution like New Mexico State University, milestones matter most when they expand our ability to serve the people of New Mexico. Today, that mission matters more than ever.

The NMSU Foundation鈥檚 milestone of surpassing $500 million in assets under management is significant not simply because of the number itself, but because of what it makes possible: greater opportunity for students, stronger support for research and faculty, and an enhanced ability for New Mexico鈥檚 land-grant university to fulfill its mission of access, service and economic impact across the state.

At a time when tomorrow鈥檚 challenges are already taking shape, from water and food systems to workforce readiness and artificial intelligence, NMSU is answering them with purpose and action. Through research, Cooperative Extension, online education and partnerships in all 33 New Mexico counties, the university is preparing students, advancing solutions and helping build a stronger future for New Mexico.

This work is being strengthened by growing philanthropic support. In just four years, Foundation assets under management increased from approximately $272 million in 2022 to more than $500 million by February 2026, representing an 83% increase.

Already this year, more than $14 million in endowment earnings have been distributed to NMSU to support scholarships, faculty excellence, academic programs and research. Since 2022, endowment support has funded approximately 12,000 undergraduate and graduate scholarships, provided more than $12.5 million for faculty positions, and contributed $2.5 million toward research and innovation.

That same momentum is also visible in broad-based giving. Over the past five years, gifts ranging from $1 to $25,000 increased by 1,000%, rising from $84,820 in 2020 to nearly $965,000 in 2025. This kind of growth reflects rising confidence in NMSU and in the university鈥檚 power to change lives, driven by the shared commitment of leadership, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, volunteers and the NMSU Foundation Board of Directors.

Our progress has been reinforced by strong public partnership. Continued support of the New Mexico Legislature for public higher education, including investments in long-term endowments aligned with state priorities, helps institutions like NMSU expand opportunity, strengthen research and serve communities across New Mexico. It is equally evident in renewed Aggie pride and alumni engagement. Across the country and around the world, alumni are reconnecting with NMSU in meaningful ways. Their engagement opens doors for students, strengthens workforce pipelines and reinforces the long-term vitality of both the university and the state.

This milestone also comes at a defining moment for NMSU. The university was recently ranked the No. 1 university in New Mexico by U.S. News &World Report and regained R1 research status in 2025, further evidence of its rising strength in research, student success and institutional excellence.

As Foundation Board Chair Louis A. Vega recently noted, surpassing $500 million in assets under management is not only a milestone but a call to disciplined stewardship. It reinforces our commitment to strong governance, rigorous accountability and strategic investment 鈥 challenging us to think bigger, expand opportunities for students, and ensure these resources are managed responsibly and sustainably for generations to come.

Ultimately, this milestone belongs to New Mexico. It belongs to the students working to build better futures, the alumni carrying Aggie pride into their professions, the faculty advancing discovery, the donors investing in opportunity, and the many New Mexicans who believe in the role a strong public university plays in shaping the future of our state. Surpassing $500 million in assets under management is not an endpoint. It is a foundation for what comes next, an opportunity to deepen NMSU鈥檚 land-grant mission, broaden access, strengthen communities and serve New Mexico with even greater purpose in the years ahead.
