NM United loans out Vargas for remainder of season
Midfielder sent to USL League One side Union Omaha
Marlon Vargas will get to see if a change of scenery does him any good.
The New Mexico United midfielder was loaned to USL League One side Union Omaha for the remainder of the season, United announced Monday. The move is pending league approval. New Mexico does have an option to recall the player.
Vargas has appeared in 41 matches, including 25 in USL Championship play last season, for United since joining the club on loan from MLS Next Pro side Colorado Rapids II in 2024. He鈥檚 recorded six goals during that span.
But Vargas has seen his minutes shrink this year. All 208 have been limited to either U.S. Open Cup or USL Cup competitions. He has not appeared in any league matches.
Vargas played 90 minutes and recorded an assist in a 3-2 win against Cruizers FC on March 18 and came off the bench for 28 minutes in a 4-0 loss against El Paso Locomotive FC on April 1. Both were U.S. Open Cup matches. He played 90 minutes in a 4-0 loss at Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in a USL Cup match on May 19.
Union Omaha (9-5-1) is currently atop the League One table with 28 points, one ahead of One Knoxville SC. Union Omaha hosts AV Alta FC on Wednesday.
United (5-4-3) is fifth in the 12-team USL Championship Western Conference standings with 18 points. The club is one point behind fourth-place FC Tulsa and three behind third-place Oakland Roots SC.
New Mexico hosts Liga MX side Atlante FC in an international friendly at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday and then hosts Oakland for a league matchup at 7:25 p.m. Saturday.
