United beats Orange County, gets back in win column

Successful Reid-Stephen PK gives NM much-needed win after tough stretch

New Mexico United finally got back in the win column, defeating Orange County SC 1-0, on the road, Saturday night.

The game began quietly, but a penalty in the 32nd minute, awarded to United鈥檚 Niall Reid-Stephen 鈥 who successfully converted, making the score 1-0 鈥 immediately kickstarted the match.

United鈥檚 Ousman Jabang, who was sent off in the last match after acquiring two yellow cards 鈥 equalling a red card and automatic ejection 鈥 received another yellow card in the 75th minute.

New Mexico pulled out the win despite Orange County鈥檚 dominance in nearly every statistical category. Orange County led in time of possession (58.7% to 41.3%), shot attempts (13 to 4) and corner kicks (5 to 4). 

But United got the win and the team improves to 2-0-2. NMU jumps from 10th in the Western Conference standings to 6th. Orange County SC falls to 2-2-1 and 4th in the table.

United remains on the road for its next match, taking on Phoenix Rising FC in Arizona on Saturday. Kickoff is 8 p.m. MT.
