As quickly as it began, the 51st sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta came to an end on Sunday. While early morning gusty winds may have kept balloons from launching in the farewell mass ascension, many still considered the overall event a massive success.
鈥淚 think of it as a top notch event,鈥� Judy Nakamura, president of the Balloon Fiesta Board of Directors said. 鈥淏alloons flew, the weather cooperated in so many respects this year. I鈥檇 be surprised if this isn鈥檛 one of the highest attended events we鈥檝e had.鈥�
Over the course of nine days, 550 balloon pilots from 12 different countries lifted off from Balloon Fiesta Park, with minimal cancellations. Twelve of the 14 total balloon events took place. This is a marked improvement over last year鈥檚 Fiesta, which saw rain soaked weather conditions lead to the cancellation of nine events.
鈥淟ast year we had a little bit of rain, a lot of wind, wasn鈥檛 able to get as many flights as we鈥檇 like,鈥� Matt Paulin, pilot of the balloon Unwind said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e had great weather this year, you couldn鈥檛 beat the crowds and add on a solar eclipse as well, made for an amazing event.鈥�
Fellow pilot Collin McClung echoed Paulin鈥檚 comments, saying this year鈥檚 event was both special and successful. 鈥淚t has been one of the best fiestas I鈥檝e ever been to. Period. The amount of events that were able to get off, then the eclipse just made it an extra special event for everybody.鈥�
While the eclipse was a highlight for many, it was just one of the many attractions offered at this year鈥檚 Fiesta according to Nakamura, who said the board is always searching for more events to add to the schedule to give attendees options and reasons to stay after the balloons have launched.
鈥淲e work really hard to ensure there鈥檚 something special about every year. Last year we did the drone show for the first time, it was really a hit, so this year, we doubled the number of drones,鈥� Nakamura said.
The board also invited Great American Kites & Events to fly their massive kite, had sand sculpting events, and held a car show.
鈥淚 really feel part of what made this (Balloon Fiesta) special is all the effort that went in to do special, new, or larger shows,鈥� Nakamura said.
All of this would not be possible without over 1,000 volunteers who helped put on the Fiesta, like Emily Pime, one of the launch directors. After a long week of events, Pime and her fellow volunteers are looking forward to some much deserved rest.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been exhausting, but wonderful, that鈥檚 why we come out here,鈥� she said.
The total economic impact of this year鈥檚 sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta something Nakamura and the board look forward to seeing. Last year鈥檚 sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta had a total estimated economic impact of $203.19 million in 2022, according to a study by the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta. That鈥檚 a number Nakamura expects to get close to again when the final impact is released from this year鈥檚 event.
But as the curtain closes on the 2023 edition of the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta, attention turns to what will take place next year. For Nakamura and the board, while they can鈥檛 disclose any specific details, she promises they will keep looking for new and innovative events to bring to the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta.
鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be pretty tough to beat a solar eclipse,鈥� Nakamura said laughing. 鈥淏ut we鈥檒l do it in other ways. The balloons are the stars of the shows, but there鈥檚 a lot of supporting acts all around the balloons.鈥�

Last year was a disappointing one for fans of the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta as soggy weather canceled many of the sessions, but for those wishing to watch the balloons this year, those tickets will still be honored.
"For the sessions that were 鈥� canceled because of weather those tickets are still good," said Tom Garrity of the The Garrity Group, representing the Fiesta. "And those numbers are in the system of the ticket company for this year. People just need to show up with those tickets."
Garrity added tickets that were used last year for a session that went as planned will not scan, so be sure you only bring tickets for days that were canceled.

The sunshine will continue through the weekend, but temperatures will begin dropping as Thursday winds bring in a cold front.

Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad
Traveling between Chama and Antonito, Colorado, the Cumbres and Toltec offers spectacular fall views and Rocky Mountain scenery, all on board a narrow gauge steam locomotive.
Chaco Canyon National Historical Park
An International Dark Sky Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chaco Canyon contains the archaeological sites of the Ancestral Puebloan people. Learn about the people who built these massive buildings and their impact on the Southwest.

This year marks the 51st anniversary of the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta.
Back in 1972, balloons were not so common in sa国际传媒官网网页入口, and Sid Cutter was the go-to guy as a balloon pilot himself and acquainted with other balloonist in New Mexico and around the country.
Cutter manged to get 21 balloons committed to coming to a balloon rally for the 50th anniversary of KOB radio, now known as KKOB radio.
Several thousand people showed up for the event, even though 13 balloons ended up attending.
Since then, it has grown into the international event it is today and this year, spectators have the added bonus of a solar eclipse to look forward to, in addition to the spectacular balloons.
