Albuquerque Little Theatre is ready to whip up a storm.

From Thursday, July 10, through Aug. 7, the theater company is bringing the William Shakespeare classic 鈥淭he Tempest鈥 to stage.

鈥淭he Tempest鈥 follows the story of Prospero, a sorcerer, and his daughter Miranda, while conjuring magic, shipwrecks and transformations.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a famous theater critic, Harold Bloom, and he called it something like an experimental comedy,鈥 Bobbi Masters, the show鈥檚 director, said. 鈥淲hich always kind of stuck out to me, because we don鈥檛 often think about Shakespeare as being experimental.鈥

Masters and choreographer Jessica Wilson found that the show explores change and crafts a beautiful theme.

鈥淥ne of the most famous lines from the show that, 鈥榳e are such stuff as dreams are made on,鈥 which I think is just really beautiful,鈥 Wilson said. 鈥淚 think it also speaks to this hope and this desire for change that he then kind of embraces.鈥

While 鈥淭he Tempest鈥 is a classical Shakespearean play, stage manager Zachary Fisher hopes that by coming to see it, people can see that they do enjoy the Bard.

鈥淚 always find it fun whenever people say, 鈥極h, I don鈥檛 really like Shakespeare. It鈥檚 not quite my cup of tea,鈥欌 Fisher said. 鈥(Then) reminding them that a lot of the classics that are loved today are actually typically retellings of lots of Shakespeare鈥檚 works.鈥

Shakespearean retellings include 鈥淭he Lion King鈥 (鈥淗amlet鈥) and 鈥10 Things I Hate About You鈥 (鈥淭he Taming of the Shrew鈥), according to Fisher. Masters finds that even with 鈥淭he Tempest,鈥 everyone can enjoy it.

鈥淚 really think that, you know, Shakespeare is very smart in that he has something for all of the different audiences that come to see the show,鈥 Masters said.

Fisher wants both the audience and actors to immerse themselves in this 鈥渧ibrant storytelling piece,鈥 and take a break from the everyday world.

鈥淐oming to the theater, it causes us to have to tap into a different part of our imagination,鈥 Fisher said. 鈥淏eing able to see something that鈥檚 brought to life in front of you through the creativity of doing things with people鈥檚 hands, with their bodies, in real time.鈥
