The Rio Grande Sky Fiesta will be held at Los Luceros Historic Site in Alcalde on Saturday, Nov. 2, and Sunday, Nov. 3. The Zozobra balloon, right, is scheduled to make an appearance
The Zozobra balloon roars to life during the 2024 sa国际传媒官网网页入口 International Balloon Fiesta. The balloon is scheduled to make an appearance Saturday, Nov. 2, and Sunday, Nov. 3, at the inaugural Rio Grande Sky Fiesta in Alcalde.

鈥淭his is going to be held at Los Luceros Historic Site, which is a state-owned property run by the historic properties division of the Department of Cultural Affairs,鈥 said Eric Vasquez, executive director of the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area, which is putting on the event. 鈥淚t is a unique location. It has been continually occupied, probably for over 1,000 years.鈥

Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo is located nearby, and Los Luceros once served as the county seat for Rio Arriba county. The property features hundreds of apple trees and an 18th century territorial-style adobe hacienda, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently closed for renovations.

鈥淭his property, Los Luceros, is worth the trip itself, but with the balloons, it鈥檚 just another reason to do it,鈥 Vasquez said. 鈥... This is a New Mexico gem that most people aren鈥檛 even aware of.鈥

Also on the property, is a visitor鈥檚 center, three residences, an 18th century chapel, original village jail, farm buildings, and irrigated pastures bordered by the bosque on the Rio Grande, according to the site website.

鈥淭here鈥檚 herds of elk that actually live on the property with the residents, so because of that, we鈥檙e just trying to respect that we鈥檙e going to have about 15 (hot air) balloons, including the Zozobra balloon,鈥 Vasquez said. 鈥淲e鈥檒l have some vendors, we鈥檒l have a few artisans and it鈥檚 a chance to enjoy the balloon fiesta, get up close to the balloonists.鈥

The smaller Zozobra version will also be at the event.

鈥淲e have a group of balloonists from basically sa国际传媒官网网页入口 and Santa Fe,鈥 Vasquez said. 鈥淭he Zozobra balloon will be there, and they will be bringing their miniature balloon as well. So they鈥檙e going to be setting the balloon up and doing ground training for all their different people. For any balloon, they have to get a lot of people trained up on this operation.鈥
