Santa Fe Playhouse's 'Something Rotten!' combines showbiz and satire

It鈥檚 a battle with the Bard.
鈥淪omething Rotten!鈥� tells the story of two brothers trying to make it big by producing the first ever musical after a soothsayer told them that it was the next big thing in theater. All while competing with William Shakespeare.
Santa Fe Playhouse is bringing the musical to the stage at the Scottish Rite Temple鈥檚 Alhambra Theater.
鈥溾�楽omething Rotten!鈥� is a great way to entice people to have a good, relaxing and fun time at the theater,鈥� Anna Hogan, producing artistic director of Santa Fe Playhouse, said.
The show is good for everyone, according to Hogan.
鈥淗ere鈥檚 a ton of cameos to do with theater and musical theater,鈥� Hogan said. 鈥淪o, if you are a theater person, it鈥檚 chock-full of pun-intended Easter eggs, and it鈥檚 a really great time.鈥�
The show is a classic, and Hogan says Santa Fe Playhouse has found ways to give it its own spin on a smaller stage.
鈥淲e aren鈥檛 following the trajectory of what鈥檚 been done on Broadway,鈥� Hogan said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e trying to find an authentic way to make the show feel like it鈥檚 at home in the theater it鈥檚 in.鈥�
鈥淪omething Rotten!鈥� is a musical comedy, but that doesn鈥檛 stop it from being suitable for an audience of all ages. According to Hogan, it鈥檚 recommended for ages is 12 and up.
鈥淚t does have some innuendo in the comedy, but most of that is probably going to go over heads, but really, it鈥檚 a fun look at just how plays are made,鈥� Hogan said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 something that鈥檒l hold attention.鈥�
Hogan says that comedy is the reason to see this show and enjoy a night full of merriment.
鈥淚f you just want to have a really good time and just laugh, this is the show to see,鈥� Hogan said. 鈥淚t is so funny from beginning to end.鈥�
