Vortex Theatre brings the multiverse of 'Constellations' to the stage
Michelle Belmont is Marianne and Evan Spreen plays Roland in 鈥淐onstellations.鈥
A barbecue sparks a romance between beekeeper Roland and physicist Marianne.
After they鈥檝e moved in together, a confession of infidelity breaks them up. Later, they bump into one another ballroom dancing. They resume their relationship and eventually marry.
Opening at the Vortex Theatre on Friday, Aug. 25, 鈥淐onstellations鈥 blends the multiverse, cosmology and string theory with multiple universes pulling people鈥檚 lives in various directions.
鈥淭he story is their life,鈥 said director Levi Gore. 鈥淓very aspect of their life is told through different universes, so it鈥檚 a multiverse play.鈥
Nick Payne鈥檚 play opened at London鈥檚 Royal Court Theatre in 2012, moving to Broadway in 2015 starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Wilson.
To Gore, the play contains 鈥渆very version of extremes; all the heartbreak and happiness, a parallel universe of infinite possibilities. The beauty lies in the 鈥榳hat ifs鈥 and the in-betweens.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 like what would happen if I鈥檇 met this person at another time of my life?鈥 he said. 鈥淲hat if this person wasn鈥檛 married? What if this person didn鈥檛 die? Each section of their lives is told in little variations, little vignettes.鈥
The audience follows the central romance between Roland and Marianne as a jigsaw of simultaneous moments. The actors repeat brief scenes, often with different outcomes. Payne invites his viewers to imagine everything they are not seeing, expanding the boundaries of the world we know. He raises questions about the difference between choice and destiny.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a bit of everything,鈥 Gore said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 some very tragic moments. There鈥檚 a lot of comedy as well. But I would classify it as a drama.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 structured so you can see every aspect of these peoples鈥 lives,鈥 he continued. 鈥淚t sounds complicated, but it really is not.鈥
鈥淐onstellations鈥 stars Even Spreen (鈥淭he Drawer Boy鈥) and Michelle Belmont (鈥淚t鈥檚 a Wonderful Life,鈥 鈥淭revor鈥).
