Love affair: Canteen Brewhouse hosts fourth annual ‘For the Love of Lagers’
Event showcases diverse lagers from 18 New Mexico breweries
While Mexican lagers might get the lion’s share of the attention in the Land of Enchantment, this particular category of beer has a lot more to offer.
Just ask Canteen Brewhouse general manager Jamie Schwebach.
“We love lagers,” Schwebach said. “We’re known for our IPAs, but there are so many amazing lagers made in New Mexico. We just thought it would be a great idea just to host an event where that’s all we’re focused on.
“Because even though we can sit here and say, ‘Hey, that’s a lager,’ the variety and wide range of lagers is so grand. We wanted to celebrate that and all the different flavors you can get within a single lager.”
Canteen will host fourth annual For the Love of Lagers event on Saturday, June 27, at its Aztec location from noon to 4 p.m. During that time, 18 participating breweries will showcase a variety of staples, seasonals and new releases in the lager category. Lagers, which can be pale, amber or dark, are made at cold temperatures, and their yeast typically ferments at the bottom of the liquid — which differentiates it from an ale. From a brewer’s perspective, it is more difficult to hide mistakes in a lager than it is in other styles such as an IPA or a stout.
“I think that’s my favorite thing,” Schwebach said. “You know how good a brewer is? How good is their lager? Because you can’t hide it with hops. You can’t hide if they didn’t lager it long enough. Or if they had a yeast issue. It really showcases the talent of the brewer.”
A ticket purchase includes a custom pint glass, 16 two-ounce samples, a full pint, a hot dog and a sticker. More drinks and food will be available for purchase on site. A VIP ticket option allows for early entry from noon to 1 p.m. and comes with four additional lager samples. Local music act Stranger Danger will be performing from 1-3 p.m., and the event’s designated area will also include lawn games, water guns and water balloons.
For the Love of Lagers usually sells out, not a difficult task since Schwebach keeps the event relatively small with less than 150 guests to ensure there’s enough beer for everyone. Proceeds from ticket purchases cover the cost of the festivities, and Canteen is also operating at normal business hours within the tap room for those who are unable to attend.
“The other fun thing about it is that we also give each of the participating breweries two tickets,” Schwebach said. “So then you also have a bunch of industry folk hanging out drinking lagers, too. You get this really fun atmosphere that’s just celebrating the industry and celebrating lagers in general.”
A number of new lagers will be unveiled at the event. Canteen, for example, will showcase its Liberty Lager, a seasonal that will also be front and center the following week for the Liberty Lager Jogger, a 1K fun run held in conjunction with La Cumbre Brewing Co. on July 3. There will also be smaller batches one might not find in retail outlets as well as a few mainstays. The idea is to give attendees a chance to compare and contrast the variety of lager offerings available.
“We’re so lucky because we’ve got so many great lagers in town. I can’t say one’s my favorite because they’re all just so delicious,” Schwebach said. “… Seeing the continued resurgence in lagers across the nation is really delightful, too. Partially because it pleases my palate, but I also like it because they’re usually lower ABVs, so that continues for longer conversations with people, continued communication, continued bringing people together.”
