Roses, rock and rakugo: 7 events this week

Most people associate roses with the color red. But these showstoppers of the garden come in a rainbow鈥檚 worth of blooms. You can learn more this weekend at the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Rose Society鈥檚 annual show. Or check out one of these other events that are coming up roses.

In paper

鈥淎lebrijes: A Linares Family Tradition,鈥 a traveling exhibit from the Museum of International Folk Art, is on display at the Consulado de Carrera de M茅xico en sa国际传媒官网网页入口 through the beginning of September. The show features works from the Linares family of Mexico City, whose work in cartoner铆a (papier-m芒ch茅 art) is internationally recognized. Admission is free from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The consulate is located at 1610 Fourth St. NW.

Nippon wit

Katsura Sunshine is bringing 鈥淩akugo: Stories from Japan鈥 to Fusion | The Cell at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 17. Rakugo is a form of Japanese verbal comedy that has a tradition rooted back 400 years. Tickets are $35, plus fees, at fusionnm.org. Fusion | The Cell is located at 700 First St. NW.

Guitar hero

Texas rock guitarist Eric Johnson will play at The Lensic Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 17. Johnson won a Grammy in 1992 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for 鈥淐liffs of Dover鈥 off his sophomore album 鈥淎h Via Musicom.鈥 Tickets are $44-$66 at ampconcerts.org. The Lensic is located at 211 W. San Francisco St. in Santa Fe.

By any other name

The sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Rose Society is hosting its annual rose show from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Garden Center. The event is free and will showcase roses from across the city, along with raffles, tips for growing your own roses, and more. This year鈥檚 theme is 鈥淭he American Journey: Celebrating 250 Years.鈥 The garden center is located at 10120 Lomas Blvd. NE. For more information, visit albuquerquerose.com.

Off and running

The Magdalena Burro Stampede gets off and running at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 17. Humans and burros form teams of two as they race from the mining town of Magdalena, competing in a 3- or 9-mile course. For more information, visit nmpackburros.com. 

Race for a cause

The Pericarditis Alliance is hosting the inaugural Platypus Run, a 5K run and 1K fitness walk through Los Poblanos Open Space at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16. There is even a virtual option. The event鈥檚 aim is to raise awareness for pericardial disease, which impacts the heart, and support the Pericarditis Alliance鈥檚 goal of improving diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Registration is $35-$50, plus fees, at platypusrun.com. Los Poblanos Open Space is located at 6000-6018 Los Poblanos Field Trails.

Come and sea

Theater Grottesco is bringing S艂awomir Mro偶ek鈥檚 absurdist comedy 鈥淥ut at Sea鈥 to Teatro Paraguas鈥 Second Space. 鈥淥ut to Sea鈥 is a dark comic struggle for survival between three castaways adrift on a makeshift raft, as they are torn between desperation and diplomacy. The show runs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, Saturday, May 16, and Thursday, May 21, 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, with repeats through May 31. Tickets are $20-$35, plus fees, at theatergrottesco.org. Thursday pay-as-you-will tickets must be purchased at the door. Teatro Paraguas Second Space is located at 3205 Calle Marie Suite A in Santa Fe.
