In the Raynolds Addition neighborhood south of Downtown, you can see both tree-lined boulevards and towering urban high-rises.

Meanwhile, people flock to the crowded farmers market at Robinson Park or take contemplative sips of black coffee at Java Joe鈥檚.

Like many other neighborhoods around sa国际传媒官网网页入口鈥檚 historic center, Raynolds Addition boasts hidden histories in its brick facades and alleyways.

The first weekend of May, sidewalk adventurers set out to explore these historic neighborhoods in honor of urbanist Jane Jacobs. Best known for saving Washington Square Park in New York鈥檚 Greenwich Village from destruction in the 1960s, Jacobs was a leading figure in the fight against car-centric infrastructure and suburban sprawl.

In her honor, sa国际传媒官网网页入口 tour guides will lead Jane鈥檚 Walk participants through Barelas, Wells Park, Huning Highlands and other historic neighborhoods, while guides thousands of miles away stroll through the streets of cities like Auckland, New Zealand, and Ithaca, New York.

All in all, Jane鈥檚 Walk is hosted in approximately 200 cities around the world. The tours are free and community-led but require signing up online in advance.

For organizer Danny Korman, honoring Jacobs means honoring her optimism.

鈥淎ll the things she was talking about in the 鈥60s are still relevant,鈥 Korman said.

Around the mid-20th century, as affluent and middle-class people moved away from city centers in favor of white picket fences and suburbia, downtowns lost their heartbeat.

But that rhythm isn鈥檛 gone entirely.

鈥淭hese older neighborhoods played an important role in sa国际传媒官网网页入口, and people still choose to live here,鈥 Korman said.

Many also choose to do business in Raynolds Addition.

One shop, Arrowsoul Trading Post, is run by a collective of Native American artists, including a man named Saba and his wife, Shawna Dayish.

鈥淵ou could be talking to the mayor and watching someone shooting up outside 鈥 all from the front window,鈥 Saba said, surrounded by vibrant spray-painted canvases.

Here, he said, cultures collide, and people of all different social statuses walk the streets together 鈥 from lawyers to politicians to people experiencing homelessness.

鈥淚t鈥檚 exciting; it鈥檚 a good place to be,鈥 he said.

Saba calls his art 鈥渇uture old school,鈥 a descriptor that also suits the neighborhood surrounding his shop.

In Raynolds Addition, new residents live in famed writer and philosopher Aldo Leopold鈥檚 former home, and up-and-coming businesses find a niche in time-worn buildings that were once stately mansions.

If you鈥檇 like to explore Raynolds Addition or any of the eight other neighborhoods, visit the Jane鈥檚 Walk , , and sign up ahead of this weekend鈥檚 tours.
