LAS CRUCES 鈥 A federal task force and New Mexico State Police took an armed fugitive into custody last week. Jeffrey Goebel, 40, has been charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.

Goebel was arrested on the 800 block of Foster Road, near the city鈥檚 El Paseo corridor, and booked into the Do帽a Ana County Detention Center on April 9, according to jail records and the U.S. Marshals Service.

A federal criminal complaint states that officers were watching Goebel and waiting for an opportunity to safely arrest him on a warrant alleging violations of his supervised release. Goebel allegedly drove a Mercedes Benz near Triviz Drive and Missouri Avenue and visited several individuals for what the complaint describes as suspected drug transactions. The complaint then states that Goebel recognized law enforcement officers and fled in the car.

The car was later found parked a mile and half away on Foster, and officers spotted Goebel walking nearby, at which point he fled on foot, the complaint states. Officers said Goebel dropped a loaded 9mm handgun with an extended magazine during the foot chase. The Marshals Service stated in a news release the magazine held 29 rounds and that Goebel had drug paraphernalia and a digital scale on his person when he was taken into custody.

State police obtained a search warrant for Goebel鈥檚 car, which revealed 12.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine, a .300 short-barreled rifle, pills that were not immediately identified and drug paraphernalia, according to the complaint. The rifle held 11 rounds, according to the Marshals.

Court records did not indicate that charges related to suspected drugs had been filed as of Wednesday.

Goebel was on supervised release following a sentence for a 2021 federal firearms conviction in Texas. According to court records, Goebel鈥檚 probation officer reported multiple violations involving drug use and failing to report for substance abuse treatment in 2025.
