New Mexico Tech appoints interim president to full-time role
Michael Jackson will be the university's 19th president
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology鈥檚 interim President Michael Jackson will step into the role full time.
Jackson has served as acting president of the Socorro university since July and became interim president in September, New Mexico Tech officials said in a news release.
Prior to his presidency, Jackson was provost and vice president for academic affairs at the college. Jackson said in a statement it was a 鈥減rivilege to continue serving New Mexico Tech,鈥 where he has worked since 2021.
鈥淭ogether with our outstanding staff, faculty, and supportive community, I am excited to have the student experience as our collective focus,鈥 Jackson said. 鈥淏y building on our strengths and expanding opportunities in education and research, we will advance our impact as a premier STEM institution for New Mexico and beyond.鈥
Jackson has held leadership roles at Central Washington University, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and the University of Pennsylvania. As president of New Mexico Tech, he will earn a yearly salary of $360,000.
The national search for the school鈥檚 19th president began Jan. 14 and drew more than 45 candidates, university officials said.
Jackson鈥檚 appointment follows years of leadership turmoil at New Mexico Tech: His predecessor, Mahyar Amouzegar, resigned after just over a year in the role after the Board of Regents rescinded a job offer he had made to a new vice president who had already moved his family to the area.
Stephen Wells, who held the presidency from 2016 to 2023, filed a whistleblower lawsuit alleging he was forced out in retaliation for challenging financial mismanagement at the university, the reported.
