A UFC fighter and wrestling coach at Moriarity High School is accused of head-butting his 17-year-old daughter in the nose before punching her in the face after the two argued about house chores.

Tim Means, 42, is charged with an open count of child abuse. He was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on Wednesday. He does not yet appear to have an attorney.

It is not clear whether Means remains employed by MHS. His name was not listed on the staff directory on Friday. Moriarity-Edgewood superintendent Todd Bibiano did not respond to calls for comment.

Deputies with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched around 10 p.m. April 21 to a home in the 40 block of Camino De Avila in Tijeras after receiving a call that two people had gotten into a physical altercation, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.

The caller told police that she and her father, later identified as Means, had been arguing over chores when Means allegedly head-butted the teen in the nose, the complaint states.

She told police that she pushed Means away as he continued to get into her face, according to the complaint. The two ended up in the kitchen, where Means allegedly grabbed the teen by her neck in a “strangulating manner” and held her against the counter.

The teenager told police that Means grew angrier, grabbed a potato and threw it at her face, the complaint states. The teen began to push and punch Means as she tried to get him off of her while she attempted to gather her belongings and leave.

The teen said that Means punched her on the right side of her face with a closed fist, according to the complaint.

“Let it be known that there were visible hand and red marks on (the teen’s) neck, indicating she was strangled,” the complaint states. “There was blood on and in her nose where she was head-butted and several red marks indicated she was hit in the face and on her cheek.”

Tim Means, of Moriarty, competes in a 2019 UFC fight.

Long UFC career

Means, nicknamed “Dirty Bird,” has fought professionally since 2004, compiling a 33-17-1 record — 15-14 in UFC competition. He has lost five of his most recent fights and has not fought since Oct. 5, 2024.

His fearless, aggressive style has made him popular with fans and with the UFC brass throughout his career.

Means was cut by the UFC in 2013 for repeated failures to make the 155-pound lightweight limit but was re-signed the following year and has since competed at the welterweight limit of 170 pounds.

He was suspended in 2016 after testing positive for a banned substance, but was reinstated six months later. The positive test result was attributed to a tainted supplement.
