Quarterfinals 鈥 Wednesday, the Pit

鈥&驳迟;&苍产蝉辫;(4) La Cueva 56, (5) Hobbs 43 | |

The game was tied at 41 midway through the fourth quarter, but La Cueva big man Hunter Butler, who dunks so frequently it鈥檚 as though he鈥檚 receiving a stipend for every slam, recorded back-to-back, rim-rattling two-handed dunks, sparking a 15-2 run to close the game for the Bears (24-6).

Butler who scored 15 points, and Drew Bramlett, who led the Bears with 22 points, scored all the points during that 15-2 run. Bramlett mixed in some free throws with a dunk of his own.

鈥淭hey鈥檝e been doing it all year,鈥 La Cueva coach Eric Orell said. Of Butler in particular: 鈥淗ighlight after highlight.鈥

The Bears shot 13-for-23 from the field (56.5%) in the second half,

Bramlett, with a three-point play and a 3-pointer, sparked a 12-0 run in the third quarter that put the Bears in front 33-25.

About 45 minutes before the Cavemen and Storm took the floor, a voice from inside the Carlsbad locker room could be heard screaming: 鈥淭hey are underestimating you!!鈥

Two hours later, the Cavemen very nearly parlayed that mantra into a berth in the semifinals.

Zee Huerta鈥檚 open look, a 6-footer in the lane, went off the back rim on the final shot of the game, and the clock ran out on Carlsbad鈥檚 upset bid, and its season.

鈥淲e got the look we wanted,鈥 Cavemen coach John Zumbrun said, adding, 鈥淚 thought it was in.鈥

Carlsbad, down 54-51, was at the line with a chance to tie the game with three free throws with 16.8 seconds remaining. Huerta made the first and third, but the middle try circled out, leaving Carlsbad down a point.

But Cleveland (25-6) set up the final shot when the Storm was called for traveling with 9.1 seconds to go on the next possession.

Huerta got into the lane, and it was as good a shot as any team could have hoped to get for a game-winner.

When the band鈥檚 all together, these Matadors have practically no limitations.

It鈥檚 only been about two weeks that all of Sandia鈥檚 pieces have been on the floor together for the first time this season, and on Wednesday afternoon, the Matadors turned the 5A bracket a little on its ear with their minor upset of the Rams.

Three players 鈥 George Smith, Gad Harris and Malachi Knox 鈥 who have hardly been on the floor together since the offseason, each provided a crucial basket in the final two minutes as Sandia (22-9) won its first game in three tries against Rio Rancho (25-6) this season.

鈥淲e showed some toughness and resiliency,鈥 Sandia coach Danny Brown said.

鈥&驳迟; (1) Volcano Vista 54, (8) Las Cruces 37 | Press conference |

This was the only one of the quarterfinals that generated no real energy, as the Hawks (24-5) fashioned an excellent defensive performance against the Bulldawgs (25-6).

Junior guard David Lunn scored 23 points for Volcano Vista, which also focused defensively on big guard Ben Walton, who had a quiet 14 points, and forward Jayden Brisby, who finished with 12.

鈥淚 thought we were really locked in (defensively),鈥 Hawks coach Greg Brown said.

Volcano Vista led by nine early, with Luis Gonzales and Finley Fitak both draining 3-pointers. Fitak added another 3 in a quiet second quarter. Lunn weaved his way through multiple Las Cruces defenders for a late finish and a 27-18 halftime lead.

The Hornets (25-4) simply had too much depth and firepower for the Rams (15-14).

Nico Sanchez (27 points), Juan Limas (22) and Jerry Moody (20) propelled Highland to a season high in scoring, and the Hornets led by double digits for the vast majority of the second half. Highland held a whopping 56-35 edge on the boards, and outscored Portales by 23 in second-chance points.

After winning their three previous meetings by a combined eight points, the Huskies (23-8) were able to get some separation from the Chargers (18-12) when it mattered most.

Hope broke open the game with a 15-4 run at the outset of the third quarter and never looked back, leading by as many as 31 in a comfortable triumph over its District 6-4A rivals.

鈥淚 was bemoaning that we've been playing the same team, but I guess you know who you're playing,鈥 Huskies coach Jim Murphy said. 鈥淚 think we had a good feel for what they like to do and what we can do against them.

鈥淢aybe that helped us this game. We made some adjustments and hopefully it paid off. It's about hitting shots. Our boys stepped up and hit some shots. They (Academy) missed their shots in the second half.鈥

鈥&驳迟; (5) Taos 62, (4) Del Norte 49 | |

The inside-outside duo of Malakhai Ely and Mario Rodriguez combined for 10 points during a 13-0 second quarter flurry to help propel the Tigers (25-5) past the Knights (19-11).

That run gave Taos a 30-16 lead, and it was able to keep Del Norte at arm鈥檚 length the rest of the way. It didn鈥檛 hurt the Tigers鈥 cause that Knights standout Francois Satchivi was limited after picking up three fouls in the first quarter and four fouls in the first half overall.

鈥(Del Norte coach Jeron) McIntosh found ways to get him in there, but I thought that probably helped,鈥 said Taos coach Hernando Chavez. 鈥淭he guys, not only were they solid defensively, but we rebounded really well in that second quarter. I thought that made a huge difference for us as well.鈥

鈥&驳迟; (2) Artesia 80, (7) Gallup 19 | |

Braylon Vega scored 40 points and hit nine of 11 from 3-point range as the Bulldogs (24-5) rolled past the Bengals (22-8).

The outcome was never in doubt. Artesia jumped out to a 22-2 first-quarter lead and kept the pressure on from there, increasing its lead to 40 by halftime to ensure that a running clock was in place for the duration of the second half. Gallup, meanwhile, shot just 20 percent from the field and had 23 turnovers. Artesia held significant advantages in points off turnovers (30-2), points in the paint (32-10), rebounds (37-17) and fast break points (26-0).

Complacency wasn鈥檛 going to be an issue for the defending state champions, a veteran squad with 10 seniors on the roster.

Quarterfinals 鈥 Wednesday, Rio Rancho Events Center

鈥&驳迟;&苍产蝉辫;(6) Bosque School 69, (3) Cobre 64 | |

The Bobcats live to fight another day.

Behind Josiah Wilson鈥檚 23 points and 11 points, No. 6 Bosque rallied in the fourth quarter to shock the third-seeded Indians.

The Bobcats (19-10) trailed for virtually the entire game before Jordan Kruft hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth to give them a 54-52 lead. Cobre (25-4) battled back to pull ahead by two before Bosque 鈥 no stranger to strong finishes 鈥 launched a 9-0 run to take control of the game for good.

Bosque trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half and 39-30 at the break after allowing a combined 20 points to Cobre鈥檚 talented Guck brothers, Zavin (25 points) and Izon (14 points.)

鈥30 points in a half is a lot of us (to allow),鈥 Bosque interim head coach Gerard Garcia said. 鈥淲e just had to follow the script 鈥 the brothers 鈥 I think they average 21, 20 points a game. I said, 鈥榠f one scores over 20, the other one has to score under 15.鈥欌

Bosque got exactly that to match a strong bounce-back game from one of its stars. After scoring only four points in an opening-round win over Cottonwood Classical Prep, Wilson scored 10 of Bosque鈥檚 16 points in the third quarter, willing the Bobcats to a 52-46 deficit at its close.

Cameron Holton, Carlos Ragland, and Brandyn Encinias all scored 12 points as the Panthers of Pecos (27-3) held on to survive a fourth-quarter scare from the Panthers of Menaul (22-9).

Playing for an 11th straight trip to the semifinals, Pecos led 12-5 after the first quarter and 39-28 at the end of the third. But Menaul capitalized on a fourth-quarter stretch that saw Pecos miss six of seven free throws for a late run, chipping its deficit to six points with 1:12 remaining.
