Jon Newman-Gonchar鈥檚 six-year run as the University of New Mexico鈥檚 volleyball coach has come to an end, the school announced late Wednesday.

A UNM release said Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo met with Newman-Gonchar earlier in the day and that they 鈥渕utually agreed to part ways.鈥� Newman-Gonchar had two years remaining on his contract.

鈥淛on and I met today and collectively felt that it was in the best interest of Jon, our student-athletes, and the department to move in a new direction,鈥� Lovo said in the release. 鈥淛on has led this program with care and dedication, and we are grateful for the impact he has had during his time at UNM.鈥�

Newman-Gonchar, whose teams amassed a 97-94 overall record, confirmed meeting with Lovo on Wednesday but said he wanted to continue coaching the Lobos. UNM finished 13-16 overall and 5-13 in Mountain West play in 2025 and was unable to overcome several key injuries that contributed to an 0-7 conference start.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a bittersweet moment,鈥� Newman-Gonchar said. 鈥淚 feel like this team is in a good position to compete (in the Mountain West) in 2026 and 鈥� 鈥�27 and I wish I had more time. At the same time, I鈥檓 deeply grateful I had an opportunity to coach here. I love the Lobos and I鈥檒l be rooting for them to have success.鈥�

Newman-Gonchar coached UNM to three straight Mountain West tournament appearances from 2022-24, advancing to the semifinals in 2023. It was the program鈥檚 first semifinal appearance since 1999.

But the Lobos were 50-72 overall in conference play during Newman-Gonchar鈥檚 tenure and struggled in 2025 when three starters missed significant time due to injuries. UNM has been at a competitive disadvantage in recruiting due to a lack of available NIL funding for volleyball, something other current Mountain West schools do offer.

Newman-Gonchar did not address the program鈥檚 recruiting disparities Wednesday but credited this year鈥檚 team for finishing strong under difficult circumstances.

鈥淲e beat three of the teams that went to the (MWC) tournament down the stretch,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 felt like this team showed a lot of grit and toughness and they have a strong core of returning players. I wish them all the best.鈥�

UNM had just three seniors on its 2025 roster, one of whom 鈥� Naomi Chankoumi 鈥� missed all but four matches with a season-ending injury.

Lovo credited Newman-Gonchar for his dedication to the program, adding that UNM will begin a national search for a new coach immediately.

鈥淒uring his tenure Jon guided the program to 97 wins and three Mountain West tournament appearances, mentored countless student-athletes, and represented the university with professionalism,鈥� Lovo said. 鈥淲e wish Jon and his family the very best moving forward. Our focus now is identifying the right leader to guide Lobo volleyball into the future and compete for Mountain West championships.鈥�

Newman-Gonchar, who has worked with Team USA volleyball at various levels, said he plans to continue coaching.

鈥淚 believe in my ability to coach and I鈥檓 looking forward to my next opportunity,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when I got here and I鈥檓 leaving the same way. I鈥檓 really grateful for my time with this program.鈥�
