UNM's Habtom Samuel, Evans Kiplagat advance to NCAA 10K national championship
Matthew 贰苍诲谤枚诲测 qualifies for 1,500 quarterfinals; men's pole vault delayed due to inclement weather
It鈥檚 official: Habtom Samuel is headed back to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
New Mexico鈥檚 star junior won the 10,000-meter semifinals Tuesday at the NCAA West Regional Preliminaries, finishing in 28 minutes and 42.53 seconds to clinch a spot in the national final.
Racing at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Samuel narrowly beat out Arkansas鈥 Ernest Cheruiyot (28:44.26) to lead a pack of 12 qualifiers for the NCAA 10K championship. UNM鈥檚 Evans Kiplagat (28:56.77) also finished eighth, setting the Lobos up with two qualifiers in the national final.
Fellow Lobos Vincent Chirchir (29:06.02) and Thomas Termote (30:22.35) placed 14th and 42nd, respectively, and did not advance to the championship.
The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be contested June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Regional preliminaries determining national qualifiers will run through Saturday.

UNM鈥檚 Matthew 贰苍诲谤枚诲测 (3:40.08) finished ninth overall in the first round of the men鈥檚 1,500 finals, advancing to Friday鈥檚 quarterfinal at 4:15 p.m. Fellow Lobo Joshua Abraham (3:45.56) finished 34th overall and did not advance.
UNM鈥檚 Levente Soos (51.23) finished 26th overall in the first round of the men鈥檚 400 hurdles and did not advance to the quarterfinals.
UNM鈥檚 Arian Milicija will compete in the first round of the men鈥檚 pole vault finals Thursday at 1:40 p.m. Originally scheduled for Wednesday night, the event was moved due to inclement weather.
