$4.7 million adobe home with a ‘timeless feel’ hits the Santa Fe market

Brothers TJ and Matt Rieland have been exploring grand homes all of their lives.

When they were young, it was because they were joining their dad on jobs related to their family’s pest control and tree company. Now, they’re teaming up in real estate as owners of The Rieland Group, an office under Sotheby’s International Realty.

“At a young age, we were told not to break anything,” Matt Rieland said with a laugh.

TJ Rieland added, “You definitely look at it in a different lens now that you’re in real estate.”

The brothers took over the family business, founded in 1985, after they graduated from the University of New Mexico. They ran it for about 15 years before selling it in 2019. With years of exploring Santa Fe’s homes under their belt, a transition to real estate felt natural, they said.

The brothers’ most recent listing, 26 Estates Drive, was built in 2003, before they graduated from college.

It’s a one-story home covering 7,528 square feet with three bedrooms and four bathrooms, sitting on a little less than 2 acres within Las Campanas — a gated luxury community located about 15 minutes west of downtown Santa Fe. The property also features a detached, 828-square-foot guest casita with one bedroom and one bathroom.

The Rielands brought the property to market in March, with a price tag of nearly $4.7 million, after previously listing it for $4.9 million last year.

“For a home of this quality and size, this is actually a very good price point,” TJ Rieland said.

Some of the property’s unique features include a temperature-controlled wine storage space that can hold 288 bottles, a large kitchen island with a quartzite countertop, nine fireplaces and rooftop sitting area.

The home also “showcases the craftsmanship Santa Fe is known for,” the says, with handcrafted vigas, smooth plastered walls, wood-beamed ceilings and custom cabinetry.

“It’s a fully custom home,” TJ Rieland said, adding that its classic northern New Mexico architecture and modern upgrades give the home a “timeless feel.”

Outdoor living is also a major feature of the property, which has a wrap-around porch with several seating areas, complemented by mature landscaping, stone walkways, an outdoor kitchen and dining area, and a water spa built for eight people.

While the home isn’t short of what Matt Rieland described as “grand but subtle” personality, part of what makes the listing rare is that it’s even available, the brothers said.

“The majority of the people (in Las Campanas), they buy these properties and hold them for extended periods,” TJ Rieland said, citing 21 years of ownership by the home’s current residents.

The owners, the home’s second set, are moving on from the property to be closer to their grandchildren, said the Rielands, who have worked with these particular clients for several years.

“It offered them a great home, and it offered them a place to bring their family,” Matt Rieland said.

“They would probably tell you it’s refined, polished, intentional and high-end, but without feeling overdone,” TJ Rieland added. “That was their big thing — to look good and be great, but they don’t want it overdone.”

Matt Rieland said “it means a lot” to the brothers to do business with clients they’ve known for years and to sell homes they grew up exploring with young eyes of awe and wonder.
