These days, Justin Furstenfeld likes to focus on being positive.

鈥淚 used to be the strange guy,鈥 he says with a laugh. 鈥淣ow, I just want to have all my ducks in a row and be happy. I鈥檓 beyond the tortured artist I used to be.鈥

Furstenfeld, the vocalist for rock outfit Blue October, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a band this year, finds time to look back at his life and career more frequently these days.

鈥淚 told my girlfriend that if I died tomorrow, I鈥檇 be OK,鈥 he says. 鈥淭he kids love me. I have the best guys in the band. What I鈥檝e learned is that writers can鈥檛 write anything unless they experience it. That鈥檚 what I鈥檓 doing with my life right now. I take my experiences and write about them. I鈥檓 trying to make more time to experience life.鈥

Blue October formed in 1995 and quickly began making a name for itself as a beacon of emotional transparency.

Justin Furstenfeld is joined by his brother, Jeremy Furstenfeld, Ryan Delahoussaye, Matt Noveskey and Steve Schiltz in the band.

With over a billion streams and 18 Top 40 singles, including hits like 鈥淗ate Me,鈥 鈥淚nto the Ocean,鈥 鈥淥h My My鈥 and 鈥淚 Hope You鈥檙e Happy,鈥 the band has cultivated a fiercely loyal global fanbase.

鈥淲e鈥檙e kicking off our tour in sa国际传媒官网网页入口 for the first time,鈥 Furstenfeld says. 鈥淲e have some of the best fans in the city. We usually hit sa国际传媒官网网页入口 in the middle or the end of a tour cycle.鈥

The band鈥檚 most recent single, 鈥淗ot Stuff,鈥 has been a staple on rock radio since its release in March, and will appear on the band鈥檚 upcoming album.

鈥淲e were working on the new record and Steve is such a good guitarist and he was playing these really awesome rock riffs and I said, 鈥楬old on,鈥欌 Furstenfeld says about how 鈥淗ot Stuff鈥 came to fruition. 鈥淚 thought it sounded like a ZZ Top song. This is the type of music that we never really go to do. It鈥檚 a rock 鈥檔鈥 roll song for the sake of doing rock 鈥檔鈥 roll. It鈥檚 fun to be at a stage in your life when you just want to take the cape off and make good music.鈥

Furstenfeld, who will turn 50 on Dec. 14, has been playing in a band since he was 13. Prior to Blue October, he was in The Last Wish.

He鈥檚 lived a life on stage and performing is second nature 鈥 it鈥檚 also where he thrives.

鈥淏eing on stage and making music has gotten not only quicker, but more exciting,鈥 he says. 鈥淚f I have a new idea, I won鈥檛 save it for tomorrow. I know I can reach out to people for help.鈥

Furstenfeld says the band is hitting the road as a thank you to fans.

鈥淭his is going to be a fun tour and we鈥檙e not worried about marketing,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e鈥檙e on stage showing our gratitude to the fans. They keep showing up and supporting us.鈥

In 2026, Blue October is heading back to Universal Records and will put out a 20th anniversary vinyl of 鈥淔oiled.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e going to do a world tour where we play the album from top to bottom,鈥 he says.

Looking back on 30 years of Blue October, Furstenfeld says he stands today because of all the experiences 鈥 highs and lows 鈥 and he鈥檚 proud of himself for never giving up.

鈥淭here are years before 鈥楽way鈥 that I can鈥檛 identify anymore,鈥 he explains. 鈥淚鈥檓 constantly reminded of how blessed I am to have a colorful catalog of music.鈥

Furstenfeld says Blue October鈥檚 legacy is a point of pride.

鈥淲e continue to make music that we hope connects with others,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e鈥檝e had success and never quite broke through. The world has evolved for me. I now see that I don鈥檛 want to rule the world. I just want to do 鈥榤e鈥 as well as I possibly can. And maybe add some color to this project that we鈥檝e been able to call our own for so many years.鈥
