A brush fire in San Juan County has prompted fire officials to begin evacuations for nearby residents.

According to San Juan County Fire and Rescue, crews have contained the fire near N.M. 170, just north of Road 1424, to about 2 acres as of Tuesday afternoon.

It is unclear what caused the fire.

The blaze has caused multiple power lines to go down, according to a post from the fire department. N.M. 170 will remain closed for a 鈥渆xtended amount of time,鈥 officials said.

鈥淭here is a lot of debris that is on fire and will continue to burn,鈥 San Juan County Fire and Rescue said in a social media post. 鈥淣M170 is still closed and traffic is being diverted to NM574 until we can get fire trucks out of the road.鈥

Officials are asking people to avoid the area and find an alternate route if they expect to travel near the fire.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
