'City of Angels' brings 1940s noir to the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Little Theatre stage
鈥City of Angels,鈥 open at sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Little Theatre, explores the mind and world of a 1940s detective writer, Stine, as he strives to adapt his book into film and the real world starts to mirror the fictional.
鈥淎t one point, the two worlds collide, Arthur Tedesco, show director, said.
鈥(The audience sees) the fictional detective in the writer鈥檚 head as he鈥檚 writing the screenplay, we see it play out on stage.鈥
All the actors play dual roles, Tedesco said, which makes 鈥淐ity of Angels鈥 more complex.
鈥淎ll of these people that are in his life, in his Hollywood, as he鈥檚 adapting the story are also in his detective movie, in his head.鈥
It鈥檚 just his imagination, Tedesco said.
Tedesco said when the show premiered on Broadway, it was seen as one of the most complex productions Broadway had put on, both from the dual character roles but also the difference in the roles.
鈥淲e are trying to capture a certain flavor of the films of the 鈥40s. There was a certain pattern to their speech, a certain way of speaking for the movie characters,鈥 Tedesco said. 鈥淪o their real-world Hollywood characters are completely different than their film world characters.鈥
Tedesco said that this will be the debut of 鈥淐ity of Angels鈥 in sa国际传媒官网网页入口.
鈥淚t premiered 35 years ago on Broadway, and it鈥檚 never been produced in sa国际传媒官网网页入口,鈥 Tedesco said. 鈥淚t hasn鈥檛 come through as a professional production, or been produced for the stage at all.鈥
He said that directing the production has been 鈥渁 dream come true.鈥
鈥淚 about did a backflip when sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Little Theatre announced it in their season,鈥 Tedesco said.
He has wanted to be involved with the show since seeing it on Broadway and has brought his own love for movies into the musical.
鈥淚鈥檇 always hoped that someone would bring it to sa国际传媒官网网页入口. I purchased a script about 20 years ago, just to have it in my files. And so I was thrilled they decided to produce it,鈥 Tedesco said. 鈥淎nd for me, it鈥檚 very much an homage to the film noirs and the classic films that I grew up with.鈥
Throughout the show, Tedesco has sprinkled in film Easter eggs to pay homage to his love of films and he hopes those with a keen eye find them.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a wonderfully written show. It鈥檚 witty, it鈥檚 clever, it鈥檚 cute, it鈥檚 got great songs,鈥 Tedesco said. 鈥淵ou could do it in a black box, but we have decided to go the opposite direction and bring it to all its glory.鈥
