The classic sounds of The Moody Blues will mingle in a symphonic collaboration with the New Mexico Philharmonic at Popejoy Hall on Saturday, May 4.

The tribute band Go Now! will perform The Moody Blues鈥 timeless catalog of songs, including 鈥淭uesday Afternoon,鈥 鈥淕o Now,鈥 鈥淟egend of a Mind (Timothy Leary鈥檚 Dead鈥), 鈥淚 Know You鈥檙e Out There Somewhere,鈥 鈥淨uestion,鈥 鈥淚sn鈥檛 Life Strange,鈥 鈥淔orever Autumn鈥 and 鈥淣ights in White Satin.鈥

Go Now! drummer and band leader Gordy Marshall joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers in 1990.

鈥淚 worked with them for 25 years and absolutely loved them,鈥 he said in a telephone interview from London. 鈥淚t feels like my band. I just fell in love with the whole shebang. We tour the U.K. as well as the Netherlands.

鈥淚 think The Moody Blues鈥 secret weapon is the songs are just great,鈥 Marshall continued. 鈥淭hey were all writers and they were all singers and they were all lyricists. They all had different skill sets.鈥

Formed in Birmingham, England, in 1964, the band rose to prominence with the number one single 鈥淕o Now鈥 in late 1964-65. They embraced the psychedelic rock movement of the late 1960s, with their second album, 1967鈥檚 鈥淒ays of Future Passed,鈥 being a fusion of rock with classical music that established the band as pioneers in the development of art rock and progressive rock.

鈥淭hey brought a collective musical texture to one group,鈥 Marshall said. 鈥淭hey covered all sorts of genres of music 鈥 classical, love songs, progressive and rock 鈥榥鈥 roll.鈥

The band initially hired Marshall for a nine-week tour.

鈥淲e all hit it off so well that we continued for 25 years,鈥 he said.

The Moody Blues never played 鈥淕o Now鈥 because it was sung by original lead singer Denny Laine, not longtime frontman Justin Hayward, Marshall said.

Go Now!鈥檚 biggest challenge has been deciding what to play and what to leave out, he added.

鈥淲e approach it with the greatest respect,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e stand on the shoulders of giants. I know exactly how The Moody Blues worked from the inside. We鈥檝e taken the original recordings and used that as a template.鈥

Mick Wilson, the lead singer of 10cc, handles the lead vocals. South African guitarist Nick Kendall (discovered by Queen鈥檚 Brian May) handles the guitar solos. Michael Krajewski, formerly with the Houston Symphony, will conduct.

鈥淲e鈥檙e selling out and the reception has been off the scale,鈥 Marshall said. 鈥淓verybody realizes that life isn鈥檛 that serious. We have a lot of fun on stage and we take the music very seriously.鈥

Along with his Moody Blues tenure, Marshall has worked with Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Emma Bunton (Spice Girls) and Joss Stone. In 2012 Splendid Books published his first travel book 鈥淧ostcards from a Rock & Roll Tour.鈥
