APD shoots, injures man during domestic violence call in SW sa国际传媒官网网页入口

Officers respond to a home Sunday evening after a woman reported an argument with a man who was armed with a gun

sa国际传媒官网网页入口 police shot and injured a 53-year-old man who was reportedly armed with a gun Sunday evening at a home in Southwest sa国际传媒官网网页入口 after what began as a domestic violence call.

Police on Monday identified the man as Dwayne Wilson. He was in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. 

Police were dispatched to the 1700 block of Bridge SW 鈥 near Atrisco Drive 鈥 around 4:38 p.m. after receiving a call from a woman who said she had gotten into an argument with Wilson, her boyfriend, according to sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Police Department Chief Cecily Barker.

Wilson鈥檚 girlfriend told police he had been drinking and became violent, punching her four to five times, grabbing her by the throat and restraining her for several minutes, said Gilbert Gallegos, an sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Police Department spokesperson.

When Wilson鈥檚 girlfriend tried to flee toward a neighbor鈥檚 home, he dragged the woman back inside, Gallegos said. She eventually snuck out and reached safety, but Wilson then sent her threatening messages saying he would kill her, the spokesperson said.

Officers went to the home in the 6200 block of Gonzales Road 鈥 where the alleged domestic violence incident occurred 鈥 and attempted to speak to Wilson.

鈥淭he individual came outside of the residence several times,鈥 Barker said late Sunday. 鈥淗e did not have a shirt on and a firearm could be seen in his waistband.鈥

Police told Wilson to leave the gun inside the house and speak to officers without the firearm, she said.

"At some point in time when officers were making contact with him when he was outside of the front door, he did remove the firearm from his waistband,鈥 Barker said.

At least one officer opened fire and shot Wilson in the stomach around 7:22 p.m., she said. Wilson did not fire his weapon at any time.

A drone from the Real Time Crime Center was able to capture the altercation, Barker said.

Barker said that Wilson had a criminal history, including charges of criminal sexual contact of a minor, criminal sexual penetration, domestic violence and traffic violations.

鈥淲e know that this individual has a long criminal history and spent at least 10 years in prison after a 20-year sentence,鈥 Barker said. 鈥淗e was on probation and parole after that, (which) he violated several times.鈥

Wilson is being charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated battery against a household member by strangulation, four counts of battery of a household member and telephone harassment, according to police. He will be booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center after he is released from the hospital.

The shooting was the third sa国际传媒官网网页入口 police shooting of 2026.

On Feb. 3, 51-year-old Roman Kirby was killed by sa国际传媒官网网页入口 police after a lengthy SWAT standoff that unfolded on Interstate 40 near Eubank.
