Sam Bregman says he feels "blessed" this Father's Day despite his disappointing race this year for the Democratic nomination for governor.

The Bernalillo County district attorney speaks proudly about all three of his children, one of whom is standout Major League Baseball player Alex Bregman.

"I can't be more proud of my children and I can't think of being luckier than I am as a father of the three of them," Bregman said in a recent interview.

Outside New Mexico, Bregman is best known as the father of the Chicago Cubs star third baseman.

Alex joined the Cubs this year after playing the 2025 season with the Boston Red Sox. He won two World Series in 2017 and 2022 during his nine-year career with the Houston Astros.

Sam Bregman said he frequently travels to watch his son play ball.

"The pride of watching your son put on a big league uniform and play for the Chicago Cubs 鈥� words can't describe how awesome that is," he said.

But in conversation he speaks with equal gusto about his other son and daughter.

"I'm really blessed," he said. "All three of my children are doing fantastic."

Anthony 鈥淎.J.鈥� Bregman, a manager at Petri Kia in sa国际传媒官网网页入口, is engaged to be married in November. His daughter, Jessica, lives in Houston with her husband and two daughters. Alex Bregman and his wife, Reagan, have two sons.

"I'm very much a big, big, big fan of being a grandfather 鈥� a lot of fun," he said. "I might like being a grandfather as much, if not more, than being a parent."

Bregman is recovering from a bruising year politically in New Mexico's costliest ever Democratic primary.

Bregman garnered 28% of the vote in the June 2 Democratic gubernatorial primary, losing to former congresswoman and U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.

"Obviously I'm disappointed," Bregman said of his primary loss. "I'm human, and I wanted to win. I don't look back, I look forward and I'm blessed to have an amazing family with a tremendous amount of support."

A prominent defense attorney and former chairman of the state Democratic Party, Bregman served as a city councilor representing the Northeast Heights from 1995 to 1999. His wife, Jackie, also is a lawyer.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham appointed him as 2nd Judicial District Attorney in January 2023 to fill out the remaining term of Ra煤l Torrez, who took office as attorney general that month. Voters elected him in 2024 to a four-year term as district attorney.

Bregman is tight-lipped about his future political plans and declined to say whether he will seek an additional term as district attorney.

"You get knocked down seven times, you get up eight times, that's what the family motto is," he said. "We're just going to keep grinding it out and doing the job that I have right now to the best of my abilities."
