Lightning causes Deer Canyon Fire near Mountainair, NM Forestry Division spokesperson says

No structures reported lost in 117-acre fire, according to state forestry

An over 100-acre fire near Mountainair prompted evacuations for residents on Deer Canyon Road between Daklugie Trail and Jumano Trail over the weekend.

At 4 p.m. on Saturday, a fire was discovered in the Deer Canyon subdivision, south of Mountainair, causing evacuations to be ordered. As of about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, residents were allowed to return to their homes; however, proof of residency was required for re-entry, Mountainair Mayor Peter Nieto said in a .

鈥淭he fire remains active, but crews have successfully kept it contained within the established fire retardant lines,鈥 he said in a separate post.

As of 6:26 p.m. Sunday, 117 acres burned with 0% containment. About 140 firefighters 鈥 including those from Los Alamos, Sandoval and Santa Fe counties 鈥 are assisting with the fire, according to a New Mexico Forestry Division news release.

Lightning was determined to be the cause of the fire and while no structures were impacted, many are being threatened, New Mexico Forestry Division spokesperson Emery Veilleux said in an email.

鈥淐rews continue to provide structure protection, and more retardant drops have been ordered,鈥 Veilleux said.
