Lindy's Diner owners get two-week extension to decide building's fate
City of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 extension allows building owners more time to apply for a renovation or demolition permit
City of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 officials have given the owners of Lindy鈥檚 Diner an additional two weeks to decide the fate of the partially collapsed Bliss Building.
Mayor Tim Keller said during a Friday news conference that city officials met with Dawn and Steve Vatoseow 鈥 owners of Lindy鈥檚 Diner 鈥 to discuss structural concerns about the Bliss Building, including traffic flow issues caused by barriers around the property.
The Vatoseows requested an extension to determine how they want to proceed with the building built in 1905, which the city said was a 鈥渄efensible鈥 reason to allow more time.
鈥淚t gives them more time, so that all works out,鈥 Keller said. 鈥淏ut after that 鈥 time鈥檚 up. We can鈥檛 risk that thing falling down and people getting hurt.鈥
Before granting the extension, the city announced May 8 that the Vatoseow family had to apply for either a renovation or demolition permit by May 15 or the city would move forward with demolition plans.
The family has until May 29 to make a decision.
鈥淲e really don鈥檛 have a decision as to what we鈥檙e going to do with the diner,鈥 Dawn Vatoseow told the Journal. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been told by the city it needs to come down, so the two-week extension is just because the insurance company never got to inspect the property.鈥
State Farm, which insures the Bliss Building, has not yet determined the amount of the insurance payout, Dawn Vatoseow said. She said she is waiting on that decision before determining the future of Lindy鈥檚 Diner.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 have a choice in the matter,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat choice has been made for us by the city of sa国际传媒官网网页入口. We have been locked out of the building pretty much since it was red-tagged, and the city wants the building demolished.鈥
Dawn Vatoseow said State Farm was unable to evaluate the building before the city bulldozed debris from the wall collapse into the former Lindy鈥檚 dining room. She said the insurance company did not send an inspector to the property until Wednesday.
鈥淎 bulldozer was brought in and took out the upper support beam and collapsed the roof of the building,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o that鈥檚 what State Farm had to view and look at while processing the claim. They did not get the opportunity to inspect the building after the initial facade fell.鈥
Although Dawn Vatoseow said she is unhappy with how events have unfolded since the collapse, the extension gives the family more time to decide what comes next for one of sa国际传媒官网网页入口鈥檚 most historic buildings.
