Man dies after baseball bat attack near SE smokeshop

Police are investigating the death as a homicide

A man died Sunday after he was hit with a baseball bat near a smokeshop in Southeast sa国际传媒官网网页入口 days earlier.

鈥淭he death is now being investigated as a homicide,鈥 sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said in a news release on Monday.

Police were dispatched Thursday around 5 a.m. to the Smoke Depot shop 鈥 located at 116 San Pedro SE near Central Ave. 鈥 after receiving a call that a man, later identified as 46-year-old Dwayne Burwell, had life-threatening head injuries after he was struck with a baseball bat.

Burwell was taken to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.

The investigation into Burwell鈥檚 death is ongoing, Gallegos said.
