Man sentenced to 11 years in 2019 beating, shooting death of boy, 15
A judge sentenced Scott Spencer to 11 years in prison for his role in the beating and shooting death of a 15-year-old boy who was lured into a car by his killers in 2019.
Spencer, 23, pleaded guilty April 12 to second-degree murder in the March 14, 2019, killing of Evyn Scott.
Prosecutors said Spencer was one of several people who lured Scott into a car and drove him into the East Mountains, where he was beaten, choked and shot. The boy didn鈥檛 realize that his soon-to-be killer was hiding in the trunk.
District Judge Courtney Weaks said Spencer shared responsibility for the boy鈥檚 death by allowing him to enter the car and failing to report the shooting to police.
鈥淚 understand that you didn鈥檛 pull the trigger,鈥 Weaks told Spencer at his sentencing on Thursday.
Scott 鈥渨as shot and left for dead,鈥 Weaks said. 鈥淣obody in that car went to the police and said anything. I don鈥檛 even remember how long it took. But it took an extended period of time to find a small boy on the side of a highway shot dead.鈥
Scott鈥檚 body was found on the shoulder of N.M. 14 near Paa-Ko Golf Drive with multiple gunshots to the head.
Spencer鈥檚 brother, Russell Spencer, 22, pleaded guilty in 2020 to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit kidnapping in Scott鈥檚 death.
Prosecutors said Russell Spencer was hiding in the trunk when Scott got into the car. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in July.
