Big Saturday: NM boxers in California, Tennessee, Germany
Bosque Farms鈥 Katherine Lindenmuth, 鈥淟a G眉era Pistolera,鈥 is in California to fight on a card that marks a momentous shift in how Americans watch professional boxing.
Last Saturday, Xander Zayas defeated Jorge Garcia Perez to win the WBO super welterweight title on a Top Rank, Inc., card at Madison Square Garden.
It was Top Rank鈥檚 last show of its eight-year partnership with ESPN, and, at least for the foreseeable future, the last professional boxing card available on network, basic cable or premier cable TV.
Now, it鈥檚 all about the stream.
Trust us; Top Rank will survive. Look for future TR cards on at least one, probably more than one, premier streaming service. That鈥檚 being negotiated as we speak.
Yet, as of this writing, Top Rank has no more cards scheduled for 2025 other than a co-promotion in November in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, Top Rank has fighters who need to keep busy.
Accordingly, TR featherweight Alberto Gonzalez (13-0, seven KOs) is fighting the main event on Saturday鈥檚 card at the Soboba Resort & Casino in San Jacinto, California 鈥 a card on which Lindenmuth (7-4, three KOs) is scheduled to face former national amateur champion Brook Sibrian (7-2, three KOs) in an eight-round semi-main event.
The card is being staged, not by Top Rank but by California promoter Dave Trujillo (House of Pain Promotions).
Two more Top Rank fighters, welterweight Art Barrera Jr. (9-0, seven KOs) and flyweight Perla Bazaldua (2-0, one KO) are on Saturday鈥檚 card.
The card is being streamed, not by DAZN or Netflix or Amazon Prime, but on a pay-per-view basis ($19.99, 7 p.m.) by lesser-known service .
What could this mean for Lindenmuth? Having four losses on her record and having turned 36 on Wednesday, she鈥檚 not a likely candidate for a Top Rank contract 鈥 well, unless TR likes a compelling back story; Lindenmuth is the widowed mother of three sons and has a Master鈥檚 degree in criminal justice.
Still, should she defeat Sibrian, or even show well in defeat, she鈥檒l do so with some highly influential eyes on her 鈥 eyes that that hadn鈥檛 seen her before.
Who knows? More and greater opportunities could follow.
BUSY DAY: Saturday鈥檚 New Mexico boxing schedule begins (or began, if you鈥檙e reading this in the Journal鈥檚 print edition) with Las Cruces鈥 Joscelyn Olayo-Mu帽oz鈥檚 3 a.m. MT championship bout against Italy鈥檚 Amelia Sula at the Brandenburg Cup international youth (U19) tournament in Frankfurt, Germany.
The bout is (or was) to be streamed on the German site .
In Nashville, sa国际传媒官网网页入口鈥檚 Yoruba Moreu Jr. weighed in on Friday at 121 pounds for his pro debut on Saturday against professional loser Ndira Spearman (1-16) of Levergne, Tennessee. Spearman weighed in 121.8 pounds.
The Nashville card, promoted by boxing Hall of Famer Christy Martin, is scheduled to be streamed on , starting at 5 p.m.
In San Jacinto, Lindenmuth weighed in at 104.2 pounds for her scheduled eight-rounder against Sibrian, who weighed in 105 even.
