One of track and field鈥檚 elite regular-season meets, the Richard A. Harper Memorial at sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Academy, runs Friday and Saturday.

All 13 of the sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Public Schools programs will be in attendance at the Harper.

They will be joined by some of the state鈥檚 best teams from outside APS, like the host Chargers, Los Alamos, Cleveland and Rio Rancho. Farmington, Hope Christian, Belen, Sandia Prep, Santa Fe, Los Lunas, Piedra Vista and Valencia round out the exceptionally strong field.

On the track, there will be prelims in nearly all the running events Friday, plus finals in the 3,200-meter and the 800. (The 1,600 final is Saturday). The running program gets started at 1 p.m. Friday.

Nearly all of the field events 鈥 12 of the 14 鈥 are being contested Friday, starting at 9 a.m. with boys triple jump, discus and high jump, and girls shot put, triple jump and pole vault.

With the exception of boys/girls javelin, which are Saturday morning, all the other field events will begin no sooner than 11 a.m. Friday and will be ongoing for several hours at the sprawling sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Academy Track and Field Complex.

The remainder of the running program begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Harper stadium.

METROS: The sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Metro Championships in tennis and golf are on the immediate horizon.

Metro tennis has a completely revamped format, scrapping individual brackets and turning the tournament into a team-only format, in line with what APS does with its metro events in most other sports.

The 18 teams in the field were divided into six pools of three. The six pool winners advance to the championship bracket. The top two ranked of those six have byes on Thursday, with the other four in action on campus sites.

The two winners Thursday advance to play the teams that had first-round byes. The higher-ranked teams host semifinal team matches on Friday afternoon.

The girls matches on Thursday are sa国际传媒官网网页入口 High at St. Pius and Hope Christian at Sandia. The AHS-St. Pius winner is at sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Academy on Friday. The Sandia-Hope winner is at La Cueva on Friday.

The boys on Thursday feature Atrisco Heritage at Cleveland and Eldorado at sa国际传媒官网网页入口 High. The Atrisco-Cleveland winner plays at La Cueva on Friday afternoon, while Academy will host the Eldorado-AHS winner, both in the semis.

The semifinal winners in boys and girls square off on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. (girls) and 11 a.m. (boys) at the courts at Ventana Ranch Park on the West Side, as it takes over as the new championship venue for the finals instead of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Academy.

The change in format from individual to team was done in order to give athletes a chance to gain more matches, APS athletic coordinator Mike Huston said, adding that the coaches were in favor of the new team-oriented approach to metros.

Nearly all of the APS schools (minus West Mesa) are at metros, joined by Cleveland, Rio Rancho, Sandia Prep, Hope, St. Pius, Bosque School and Academy.

Metro golf is Monday (girls) at Arroyo del Oso Golf Course at 8 a.m. The boys don鈥檛 stage their metro tournament until April 30, at Los Altos Golf Course, also at 8 a.m.

The teams competing at metro golf are sa国际传媒官网网页入口 High, Academy, Atrisco Heritage, Bosque School, Cibola, Cleveland, Del Norte, Eldorado, Highland, Hope Christian, La Cueva, Manzano, Rio Grande, Rio Rancho, Sandia, St. Pius, Valley and Volcano Vista.
