Eric Olen's 10th player for 2026-27 brings shooting and size
Lobo hoops ended the week with some big news.
Fynn Lastring, a 6-foot-10 incoming freshman forward from Germany, announced on Friday that he has signed with UNM. He is the Lobos鈥 tallest player signed for the 2026-27 season.
鈥淔ynn is a highly skilled forward that has proven himself as a versatile and productive player in elite international competition,鈥 said head coach Erin Olen in a release from UNM鈥檚 athletics department, later adding that he and his staff 鈥渓ook forward to him being an impactful player upon arrival.鈥
Welcome to New Mexico Fynn Lastring!

The 6-10 German center joins UNM鈥檚 2026 recruiting class!
The versatile 18-year-old (he turns 19 in May) Lastring took a recruiting visit to sa国际传媒官网网页入口 in the fall. He had interest then from the likes of Nebraska, Wisconsin, Cal and Liberty.
Lastring is expected to be eligible for four college seasons, though has played two seasons of professional basketball in Germany, and still has one regular season game remaining for his current team, Artland Dragons, before the upcoming playoffs in Germany鈥檚 BARMER 2, the second-tier pro league in Germany. So long as the NCAA doesn鈥檛 rule Lastring was paid more than necessary expenses in those two pro seasons, he will not lose any playing eligibility.
He has been a part of the Rasta-Vechta club team for the past several years and it was that club that posted a story on his signing with UNM on Friday morning on its website.
鈥淭hanks to RASTA鈥檚 support over the past two years, I already feel well prepared for the NCAA,鈥 Lastring said in a quote released by UNM. 鈥淚 am ready for the challenge of going to the USA and know that Coach Olen and his staff will help me take the next step in my career. I am excited to become a Lobo and look forward to getting to play in front of so many great fans at The Pit.鈥
Lastring averaged 12.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks for the German national team against FIBA competition in the 2025 U18 EuroCup. He hit 12-of-31 (38.7%) 3-pointers in that seven-game event (that's an average of 4.4 3-point attempts per game for the big man). His best game was a 20-point, nine-rebound, four-assist, seven-block effort in a win over Sweden.
鈥淔ynn is a versatile player that can really stretch the floor while also being able to exploit mismatches in the paint,鈥 Olen said. 鈥淗e has shown excellent play making ability and anticipation on the backboards. His unique skill set is one that our fans will enjoy watching and we look forward to him being an impactful player upon arrival.鈥
The same Rasta-Vechta club Lastring is a part of had a center play Division I basketball in the United States last year. Johann Gr眉nloh, 7-0, started all 36 games for nationally ranked Virginia. The club called the interest from top NCAA programs 鈥渧alidating鈥 of their development of players.
鈥淥ver the past few years, we have invested heavily in additional personnel and infrastructure to ensure that RASTA Vechta remains a club where top talents can develop their skills to the fullest,鈥 sporting director Gerrit Kersten-Thiele said in the team鈥檚 article.
鈥淪o far, this approach has been working very well. Of course, it would be wonderful if a player were also able to establish himself as a valuable asset to our BBL roster during his time in Vechta. However, pursuing the college route is a path that many choose to take 鈥攁nd that is certainly not the wrong choice. In any case, our goal is to work alongside these young men on their career paths and provide them with the best possible guidance and support.鈥
Lastring is the 10th scholarship accounted for by UNM for the coming season, which will be Olen鈥檚 second at the helm. The NCAA now allows teams to use up to 15 scholarships, though not all teams, including UNM, plan to use all 15 roster spots for scholarship players.
Looking ahead
UNM earlier in the week announced $50 deposits are being accepted for new season tickets for the 2026-27 season 鈥 either for new season ticket holders or for returning season ticket holders looking to add new or more seats.
