No. 23 Texas A&M rolls New Mexico
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas 鈥 The streak lives on.
Texas A&M scored five straight touchdowns en route to rolling New Mexico, 52-10 for the Lobos鈥 10th straight loss dating back to last season 鈥 the longest losing streak under fourth-year head coach Danny Gonzales.
Only Northwestern (11), South Florida (11) and Nevada (11) have dropped more consecutive games.
鈥淲e got our tails whooped tonight,鈥 Gonzales said in a postgame press conference. 鈥淥ur kids fought their tails off. We got a tough football team, we鈥檝e got enough talent to compete. We鈥檝e gotta fix some things, obviously, in the secondary.鈥
While New Mexico stood up well to Texas A&M鈥檚 ground game (134 yards on 29 carries), the Aggies feasted on New Mexico鈥檚 secondary with six total receiving touchdowns. Texas A&M鈥檚 Conner Weigman threw for 236 yards and five touchdowns, three to wide receiver Noah Thomas and two to Evan Stewart, as A&M racked up 277 passing yards and 411 yards of total offense.
New Mexico鈥檚 Dylan Hopkins finished 16-for-25 passing with 117 yards and one interception in his Lobo debut.
鈥淚 thought he did a good job of what we asked him to do,鈥 Gonzales said of Hopkins. 鈥淲e weren鈥檛 gonna sit back there and throw it all day long, because we knew they were good up front.鈥
After New Mexico punted on their opening drive (10 plays, 42 yards), Weigman opened up the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Thomas. Then, on the first play of the second, Stewart blew past safety Noa Pola-Gates for a 35-yard receiving touchdown to put the Aggies ahead 14-0.
New Mexico cut into the Aggies鈥 lead in the second quarter with a six-play, 88-yard scoring drive capped off by a 27-yard touchdown scamper from running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt 鈥 the team's first score against a power opponent since a 66-14 loss to Notre Dame in 2019.
What a run by and a block by Andrew Erickson and we are on the board as its 14-7 A&M in the 2nd quarter. |

鈥淭hat was a great moment,鈥 said Croskey-Merritt of his first touchdown with New Mexico. 鈥淚t gave us a little momentum to keep fighting. We knew we could move the ball 鈥 we came out and moved the ball pretty well 鈥 but it wasn鈥檛 enough.鈥
A&M鈥檚 response? Weigman finding Thomas for a 34-yard touchdown, Le鈥橵eon Moss rushing for a 2-yard score and Weigman hitting Thomas one more time for a 9-yard touchdown 鈥 three touchdowns in the span of seven minutes. When it was all said and done, the Aggies were up 35-7 and ready to extend their lead with a 47-yard field goal with six seconds left in the first half.
Tavian Combs said otherwise. New Mexico鈥檚 redshirt senior safety got in front of Randy Bond鈥檚 47-yard attempt for the Lobos first blocked field goal since Nahje Flowers blocked Matthew Mercurio鈥檚 41-yard attempt during a 32-21 loss to San Jose State on Oct. 4, 2019.
Luke Drzewicki鈥檚 27-yard field goal in the third quarter represented the first score of the second half. Then, Stewart鈥檚 8-yard touchdown reception pushed A&M ahead 42-10.
A&M backup quarterback Max Johnson cleaned up in the fourth with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Moose Muhammad III and Randy Bond hit a 39-yard field goal with 1:10 left for the final score. With the loss, the Lobos dropped to 0-6 all-time against the Aggies.
FINAL: No. 23 Texas A&M 52, New Mexico 10

鈥淲e put a lot of work into this team, both on offense and defense,鈥 Combs said, 鈥渁nd it didn鈥檛 come out how we wanted. We gotta come out Monday and Tuesday, ready to get prepared for next week and come out better.鈥
