Revitalized San Pedro Partnership teams with famous steakhouse and Main Street of America Route 66 Centennial Caravan to bring the event to the city
Knives up and timers on, The Big Texan Challenge is rolling into sa国际传媒官网网页入口 on Friday.
The event, which starts at 4:30 p.m., will feature music and food trucks along with the competition, said Adrian N. Carver, executive director of the Revitalize San Pedro Partnership.
The organization, which works on economic development on San Pedro between Central and Interstate 40, partnered with The Big Texan and the Main Street of America Route 66 Centennial Caravan to bring the event to the city.
In The Big Texan Challenge, traditionally hosted at the restaurant in Amarillo, Texas, participants must eat a 4陆-pound steak paired with a baked potato, three shrimp, a side salad and a roll within an hour.
The challenge will be held at Microsoft鈥檚 founding headquarters, the Cal-Linn Condominiums Building, which is being considered for the state and national historic registers, Carver said.
鈥淲e think it鈥檚 going to be a really great celebration of this building that really initiated and is a part of setting off the global technological revolution,鈥 he said.
The and The Big Texan are traveling across the country to mark the 100th anniversary of the Mother Road and showcase its history.
鈥淭his is such a great opportunity to showcase a part of Route 66 that a lot of people don't know,鈥 Carver said. 鈥淭his is an area of town that has a big commitment and emphasis on car culture, and so we鈥檙e excited to showcase that as well.鈥
While there will be other things to do, the main attraction is the Big Texan Challenge, which will take place live for guests to watch. Bobby Lee, co-owner of The Big Texan Steak Ranch, said it was wonderful to host the tournament as part of the tour, which also includes stops in Gallup, Santa Fe and Santa Rosa.
鈥淲e鈥檝e always wanted to really get to be tourists,鈥 Lee said.
Lee said that alongside the centennial celebration and the 250th anniversary of the United States, The Big Texan Steak Ranch is celebrating 66 years. The challenge began the first year the restaurant was open and remains 鈥渢he Stanley Cup of the eating championships across the world,鈥 he said.
The sa国际传媒官网网页入口 stop includes five participants 鈥 individual competitor Kurt Nilson and a team with sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Mayor Tim Keller, New Mexico United President Ron Patel, Rio Grande Credit Union Vice President of Marketing David Miles and sa国际传媒官网网页入口 reporter Nakayla McClelland.
鈥淲hen you pull up to a city and start, you never know who鈥檚 going to sit down or what鈥檚 going to happen,鈥 he said.
