OPINION: APS-CNM partnership is powering New Mexico's economy
In the coming days and weeks, graduation stages across sa国际传媒官网网页入口 will fill with celebration, pride and possibility. Thousands of students from sa国际传媒官网网页入口 Public Schools and Central New Mexico Community College will cross those stages 鈥 cheered on by families, educators and friends 鈥 marking a milestone that reflects years of hard work and perseverance.
But graduation is more than a ceremony. It鈥檚 a turning point鈥攚here potential meets opportunity and the future of our community begins to take shape.
In sa国际传媒官网网页入口, we know our community鈥檚 strength is directly tied to the success of our students. Their futures 鈥 and the vitality of our local economy 鈥 depend on how well we prepare them not only to graduate, but to thrive in college, careers and life.
That鈥檚 why the partnership between APS and CNM matters so deeply. As the state鈥檚 largest school district and largest community college 鈥 together graduating more than 12,000 students per year 鈥 we share a responsibility to ensure every student has a clear, accessible pathway to success.
Together, we are building those pathways every day.
One of the most impactful examples is dual credit. Over the past five years, more than 5,550 APS students have taken CNM courses that count for both high school and college credit 鈥 tuition-free for students and their families. In the past year alone, nearly 1,500 students participated.
These experiences do more than save time and money. They allow students to explore interests early 鈥 from health care and skilled trades to IT and business, and many other high-demand fields 鈥 while building confidence as they begin to map out a future that feels both real and achievable.
That sense of possibility is at the heart of our shared work.
On CNM鈥檚 Main Campus, College & Career High School stands as a powerful example of what this partnership can achieve. This year, the early college magnet school is graduating 68 seniors who will not only earn their high school diplomas, but will have collectively completed 4,409 college credit hours, 84 certificates, and 77 associate degrees across fields from biotechnology and engineering to automotive technology and nursing assistant. All this was achieved tuition-free 鈥 saving the families a combined $370,300 in tuition.
These students are leaving high school with a big head start 鈥 whether transferring to a university, some as juniors, continuing their education at CNM, or stepping directly into high-demand careers. They鈥檙e saving time and money while being ready to enter the workforce with meaningful credentials that matter to employers.
At the same time, APS is expanding opportunity through the Academies of sa国际传媒官网网页入口 鈥 a transformative initiative that connects classroom learning with real-world experiences and career exploration. When students see how their education aligns with their interests and goals, they are more engaged 鈥 and more likely to succeed.
The Academies model is underway at three high schools, with plans to expand districtwide.
CNM is proud to be a key partner, helping provide access to hands-on learning, college pathways and industry-aligned programs that lead to high-quality careers in our community.
This work is about more than coordination 鈥 it鈥檚 about commitment. A shared commitment to equity, access and the long-term success of our students and our city.
In every thriving community, there is a shared understanding that student success is built through connection 鈥 between classrooms and careers, between educators and employers, and between systems that choose to work together rather than apart.
When those connections are strong, the results are powerful.
More students are graduating with college credit and industry-recognized credentials. More are entering college with confidence and direction. And more are stepping into careers that offer stability, purpose and opportunity.
At the same time, employers benefit from a stronger, more prepared local workforce that helps them grow and thrive.
This is how communities grow stronger: by investing in students and creating clear, supportive pathways to opportunity. When K-12 education and higher education work hand in hand, the impact extends far beyond the individual students. It strengthens families and communities, and fuels economic growth.
As we celebrate graduation season, we also celebrate what it represents 鈥 not just individual achievement, but our community鈥檚 shared commitment to a brighter future for all.
Together, APS and CNM are striving to ensure opportunities and pathways to quality careers and good lives are easier to discover for our students, because every student deserves the chance to succeed.
And when our students succeed, so does sa国际传媒官网网页入口.
